"SOULMATES"

By: Shiela May G. Maluping

"Soulmate
is a term sometimes used to designate someone with whom one has a feeling of deep and natural affinity, love, intimacy, sexuality, spirituality, and/or compatibility. A related concept is that of the twin flame or twin soul – which is thought to be the ultimate soulmate, the one and only other half of one's soul, for which all souls are driven to find and join. However, not everyone who uses these terms intends them to carry such mystical connotations." -wikipedia.org

Some say that your soulmate is the one you will end up in the altar with. Some say that your soulmate is the one you will love for the rest of your life but will stay as your friend or companion for the rest of your existence. But what does a real "soulmate" truly mean?

One theory of soulmates, presented by Aristophanes in Plato's Symposium, is that humans originally consisted of four arms, four legs, and a single head made of two faces, but Zeus feared their power and split them all in half, condemning them to spend their lives searching for the other half to complete them. Maybe that is somehow true. Just like my soulmate. I call him "Uncle Sonny Boy Dear". My very loving friend who I have known for more than ten years. We nearly grew up together. He was like more than a big brother to me. Though we are not related by blood, he treats me like his little sister and sometimes like his real nieice just to play around with the pet name I gave him. He is my great companion. We shared many similarities as much as differences. We are partners in crime though sometimes he scolds at me for being over evil and my irresponsibility. He is my conscience and at the same time my breathing diary. I tell him almost everything, and he is always there to listen. Being in the same organization with him makes my stay even more comfortable. We share the same passion for performing. And that made our bond grew much stronger.

But now that he is about to graduate, I feel like I will about to loose my soulmate, my best friend, my big brother and my uncle. I know that it is not all the time he can stay by my side. But it feels like it has been too soon. It seems that it was just yesterday when I first met him. But now we are about to bid our temporary goodbye. But I know we will see each other again. Soon enough that after graduation we will still hang out.

So I guess the word "soulmate" doesn't necessarily connotes a romantic relationship between two people. Because friendship sometimes can give you a soulmate that you will not end up saying 'I do' with, but can be your companion and buddy for the rest of your life.
